ETIAS for US citizens

Do US citizens need ETIAS for Europe?

US passport holders can travel visa-free for short stays in the ETIAS area. Once ETIAS becomes operational, eligible Americans will need an approved travel authorisation linked to the passport used for the trip.

1. Do US citizens need ETIAS?

✓ Yes — once ETIAS becomes operational
  • You are travelling on an eligible United States passport
  • Your trip is a short stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period
  • You are visiting one or more of the 30 ETIAS countries
  • You are travelling for tourism, business, transit or another permitted short-stay purpose

ETIAS is a travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers. It is not a visa and approval does not itself guarantee entry at the border.

2. Passport rules for United States

Use the same United States passport for your ETIAS application and your trip. If that passport expires or is replaced, the linked ETIAS will no longer travel with the new document.

The ETIAS authorisation will be electronically linked to the passport used in the application. If that passport expires or is replaced, a new ETIAS will normally be required.

What US travellers should check before Europe

  • Use the passport you intend to carry throughout the trip.
  • Check the 90-days-in-any-180-days limit across the participating countries, not country by country.
  • A second EU nationality can change the answer: EU citizens should travel under their EU free-movement rights rather than ETIAS.

6. Important exceptions
