3. Arriving in Portugal

The ETIAS requirement is linked to your eligibility and travel document. The border procedure can differ depending on how and from where you arrive.

By air

Lisbon, Porto and Faro are major gateways, while Madeira and the Azores also receive international flights. Eligible travellers use the same ETIAS-linked passport throughout the trip.

By land or rail

Portugal has a land border with Spain inside the Schengen Area. ETIAS is still part of the traveller’s eligibility even when arriving overland from Spain.

By sea

Cruise and ferry passengers who are eligible visa-exempt travellers are subject to the same ETIAS framework.

4. Border and territory notes

Madeira and the Azores are autonomous regions of Portugal and are included in the Portuguese Schengen framework. The same ETIAS authorisation applies to eligible travel there.

Practical information

Portugal uses the euro. The Schengen-wide 90/180-day short-stay limit continues to apply.
