1. Overview
ETIAS will apply to eligible tourism, business and other short stays in Belgium. The authorisation is linked electronically to the passport used in the application.
- Travel on an eligible visa-exempt passport
- Plan a short stay within the 90-days-in-180-days rule
- Travel for tourism, business or another permitted short-term purpose
- Are not travelling under an exemption such as EU free-movement rights
2. Who needs ETIAS for Belgium?
Travellers from eligible visa-exempt countries will need ETIAS for short trips to Belgium once the system is operational. Document-specific conditions can apply to some passports.
3. Arriving in Belgium
The ETIAS requirement is linked to your eligibility and travel document. The border procedure can differ depending on how and from where you arrive.
Brussels Airport and Brussels South Charleroi are major gateways. External-border arrivals use the applicable ETIAS and EES process.
Belgium has dense rail and road links with France, the Netherlands, Germany and Luxembourg. Internal Schengen travel does not require a separate Belgian ETIAS.
Ferry, cruise and other sea arrivals are governed by the same ETIAS eligibility rules for visa-exempt travellers.
4. Border and territory notes
Belgium is fully in the Schengen Area. A valid ETIAS can support eligible travel onward to other participating countries during the same authorised short-stay period.
Practical information
Belgium uses the euro. ETIAS does not alter the 90/180-day Schengen short-stay calculation.
Frequently asked questions
When will ETIAS become operational?
Expected Q4 2026. The EU says the specific start date will be announced before launch.
Do I need another ETIAS if I continue from Belgium to France or the Netherlands?
No separate country-specific ETIAS is required. A valid ETIAS is linked to your passport and can support eligible travel across participating countries.
Is ETIAS checked only at Brussels Airport?
No. The requirement is tied to your travel eligibility and passport, not to one specific airport.
