Quick answer
ETIAS is checked before travel
Once operational, ETIAS will be linked to the travel document of eligible visa-exempt travellers. Carriers and border authorities can verify whether the traveller has a valid authorisation.
EES records border crossings
The Entry/Exit System electronically records entries and exits of non-EU short-stay travellers within its scope, including the time and place of the crossing, and helps calculate authorised stay.
Some travellers interact with both systems
A visa-exempt traveller can need ETIAS before the journey and then have the border crossing recorded in EES. Having ETIAS does not replace EES registration where EES applies.
EES changes the border process, not the ETIAS application
EES replaces manual passport stamping for travellers in scope and supports electronic stay calculations. ETIAS remains a separate authorisation system.
Frequently asked questions
If I have ETIAS, do I still use EES?
If you fall within the scope of EES, yes. ETIAS does not replace EES border registration.
Is EES an application I must submit before travel?
No. EES is a border-entry and exit system, not the ETIAS travel-authorisation application.
Are ETIAS and EES the same database?
No. They are distinct EU information systems designed for different functions.
