3. Arriving in Austria

The ETIAS requirement is linked to your eligibility and travel document. The border procedure can differ depending on how and from where you arrive.

By air

Vienna International Airport is Austria’s main international gateway. ETIAS is linked to the passport used for the application and journey.

By land or rail

Austria is landlocked and many visitors arrive by rail or road from neighbouring Schengen countries. ETIAS remains relevant to the traveller even where there is normally no routine internal-border check.

By sea

Austria has no sea border. River-cruise arrivals on the Danube are still subject to the traveller’s underlying Schengen and ETIAS eligibility.

4. Border and territory notes

Austria is fully in the Schengen Area. Temporary internal border checks can occur, so travellers should keep the ETIAS-linked passport available.

Practical information

Austria uses the euro. The 90/180-day limit is calculated across the Schengen Area, not separately for Austria.

Frequently asked questions

When will ETIAS become operational?

Expected Q4 2026. The EU says the specific start date will be announced before launch.

Do I need ETIAS when entering Austria by train?

If ETIAS applies to your nationality and trip, yes. The authorisation relates to the traveller and passport, not the transport mode.

Can I spend 90 days in Austria and then 90 days in another Schengen country?

Not on the normal short-stay rule. The 90 days are counted across the Schengen Area in any 180-day period.
