Quick answer
Short courses can fit within visa-exempt travel
A short course, seminar or training programme may fit within the normal visa-exempt short-stay framework. ETIAS does not extend the permitted duration of that stay.
Longer study follows national immigration rules
If your programme requires a stay beyond the short-stay allowance or falls into a category requiring a national student authorisation, ETIAS is not a substitute. Check the rules of the country where you will study.
Count the whole Schengen stay
Where the 90/180-day rule applies, days spent studying or training are counted together with tourism and other short visits across the Schengen area.
Carry supporting documents
ETIAS does not guarantee entry. Border authorities can still ask about the purpose and conditions of your stay, so carry relevant course, accommodation and onward-travel information where appropriate.
Frequently asked questions
Can I study in Europe for three years because ETIAS can be valid for three years?
No. ETIAS validity is not the permitted length of stay.
Can ETIAS replace a student visa?
No. If national rules require a student visa or residence permit, ETIAS does not replace it.
Does a short course use my 90/180 days?
Yes where the Schengen short-stay rule applies.
