Quick answer

Most ETIAS applications are expected to be processed within minutes. Some cases can take longer, and the EU advises travellers to apply well before travel.

Most applications should be decided within minutes

Automated checks are expected to resolve most ETIAS applications quickly. The decision is sent to the email address supplied in the application.

What does the 96-hour period mean?

If ETIAS is not granted immediately, the EU says that within 96 hours you should be told whether it has been granted, refused or whether more information or documentation is needed.

If additional information is requested

You can be given 10 days to provide requested information or documents. Once sufficient information is submitted, the authority should notify you of the decision within a further 96 hours.

Some applications can require an interview

If documents are not sufficient, an interview may be requested online or at a consulate. The EU states that the decision should be made within 48 hours after the interview.

i

Because extended review can take up to 30 days, the safest approach is to obtain ETIAS before buying non-refundable travel arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Is ETIAS guaranteed in a few minutes?

No. Most applications are expected to be quick, but some require additional checks.

What if I do not receive an email?

Check the junk or spam folder for the email address used in your application.

Can urgent travel make ETIAS faster?

The EU still requires a valid ETIAS for eligible travellers. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly, but there is no general fast-track guarantee.
